about captain one golf society

Captain 1 Golf Society was founded by the former captain of the Damang Golf Club, Pius Ayeh Appiah in 2017. During his tenure as captain, he was affectionately called ‘Captain 1’ by his fellow golfers because of his contribution to the development of golf, a name he liked and enjoyed.

After finishing his term of office, he decided to set up a charity organization to assist the vulnerable and under-privileged in society. As a golfer, Pius thought it wise to use his talent and expertise to help the society by setting up the captain 1 Golf Society.

The society is made up of golfers and non-golfers with the sole aim of developing the game of golf at the grassroots level.

It is a known fact that many believe golf is a game or sport for the elite and this ‘myth’ discourages others interested in the sport to pursue their dream of becoming golfers due to their background.

Therefore, the society decided to set up a charity event where we would use proceeds from organized events to assist kids in orphanages or vulnerable homes to train them in golf so they can also realize their dream of becoming golfers someday.

The society has so far adopted two orphanages in Tarkwa and Kumasi and it is our hope that we adopt more orphanages in areas where there is a golf club in the country.

The society’s vision and mission statement coupled with our statement of core values informs the procedures and quality of our decision making to achieve excellent results in the game of Golf.

Our Achievements

Annual Charity Event – In line with our objective of ensuring golf is accessible to all, our annual tournament follows that same principle. Just like the FA Cup played, our charity event is also opened to golfers across the country whether they are members or non-members of the society and our Handicap System tends to level the playing field. This is because we have had both professionals and amateurs winning the ultimate. Our charity event is in its fifth year and that is an enviable feat for us considering other golf events that could not even survive for three years.

Monthly medals – we successfully fulfilled our mission of ensuring our Monthly Medals were played at almost every golf club in our beautiful country, affording our participants an opportunity to sample and admire the hard work those course superintendents and green keepers had done to maintain their courses in such pristine condition.

Kids Project – The Captain One Golf Society has a kids’ project which is ongoing in Kumasi, Obuasi, and Tarkwa where vulnerable kids are being trained in the game of golf. The project focuses on nurturing golf talents in the country while ensuring that golf is introduced to everyone across the country.

The girls who are below the age sixteen undergo months of training by professional golfers in this special initiative by Captain One Golf Society. This project is aimed at giving kids the option to consider golf as a future profession, choosing to become either a Playing Tour Professional or Teaching professional. The beneficiaries were selected from Angel of Hope Orphanage in Tarkwa, which is the first beneficiary of this project, also Safe-Child Advocacy, a non-governmental organisation – an establishment of the Catholic Archdiocese of Kumasi – that is concerned about the plight of the vulnerable in the society and children who work on the streets. We have also collaborated with Mama Love Foundation at Obuasi to give young girls the opportunity to exhibit their talent in  golf.

Kids Tournament – We were able to organize our first and second Kids Tournament and that was a success. It saw about 30 young golfers from our kids’ project competing for laurels. The kids’ tournament would be a curtain raiser for our annual charity event each year.
